Thanks for so many of you coming back!
I wanted to take a minute and address the commenting thing directly and give a little overview of what's happened and what will happen.
There were spammers that came along and inundated the site with massive drops of comments. Like 10,000 in a few hours. These were all semi-hidden on old posts so they went without detection for a while and then had to be retro-cleaned. If you could find one of these comments every 10 seconds and deal with it, it's still 27 hours of work to clean them all up.
So I disabled commenting on all posts older than 1 day. And then monitor those closely to get ahead of the problem. Since then I've backed it out to 72 hours, and will back it out to a week today.
Hopefully we can get this back to fully open commenting soon, but I don't want to open the doors up to the spammers until we have an active defense system that's in development.
